BROWNSVILLE – Health officials say they are surprised by the number of locally acquired Zika cases.
Cameron County health administrator Esmeralda Guajardo says the number of people testing positive for Zika has drastically decreased.
She claims that as of September, out of 8,000 lab tests throughout the county, only nine women tested positive.
“The number as a whole is pretty surprising and I’m not sure what to attribute it to,” says Guajardo.
She says she is sure the factors, such as education and public cooperation, as well as local and state leaders taking the issue seriously, helped in preventing a wide-spread problem throughout the county.
