We’ve all heard about the healing powers of crystals—and the power of a great manicure. But it was Mazz Hanna, Celebrity Manicurist and Founder and CEO of Mazz Hanna High-Vibration Luxury Skincare, who had the genius idea to combine the two. Her Crystal Healing Manicure stole the spotlight in the beauty world, bringing her an A-list clientele that includes Julia Roberts, Amber Heard, Emma Roberts, Selma Blair and Greta Gerwig, to name a few. Hanna tells us all about how she made a career switch to follow her passion, why manicures and crystals belong together, and the power of CBD in beauty products.
How did you make the transition from pharmaceutical ad executive to a celebrity nail artist and certified crystal healer? It all started with a panic attack on an airplane. Even though I didn’t find the fulfillment I had hoped for in advertising, it seemed foolish to throw away a lucrative career that I had worked so hard for—especially as a woman in a male-dominated industry. As I got older it’s something that I thought about more often—like, is this it?—and frequently found myself fantasizing about what I would do if I could do it all over again. But something shifted in my brain and I immediately became more in-tune with my needs as a human.
After that happened, it forced me to take stock of what’s important in life, which is what propelled me to make a significant career change. I didn’t care about the advertising money anymore and I decided that my time on this planet had a much higher valuation than the salary I was being paid. I went back to those daydreams and fantasies about “if I could do anything” and nails and crystals always came to the forefront. They were always passions of mine, so I brainstormed about how I could bring them both together and came up with a concept for a crystal healing nail salon.
From there, I gave a few months’ notice at my job (everyone thought I was nuts), enrolled in nail school, signed up to study for my crystal healing certification, and got cracking on a business plan with my husband and business partner. In the end, the universe had a different plan for me that didn’t include opening that salon, but I know that I’m exactly where I’m supposed to be. I left my job on September 15, 2017, and launched my skincare line on that same date one year later.
What triggered your dedication to beauty and nails? I have been interested in beauty and nails ever since I was a kid. My mom is the most beautiful woman I know, and I remember being totally fascinated watching her groom herself. Whenever she would do her hair, makeup, and nails, she would always take the time to teach me what she was doing and why she was doing it. She used to have a nail kit that she would take out every week or so and she would meticulously cut her cuticles and paint her nails. She was the one who taught me how to give myself a great at-home manicure. It didn’t take long before I became bored with regular polish and decided to teach myself how to do acrylics. I remember my mom taking me to Sally Beauty to get all the supplies right before we left for a family vacation to the Outer Banks. It rained the entire week and it gave me a lot of time to practice. By the end of that rainy vacation, I had long purple acrylic nails and felt like the coolest girl in the world. I learned the impact that a great manicure has on your overall well-being at a very early age.
Why were you initially attracted to crystals? My interest in crystals started when I was a small child, around 6 or so. I had neighbors who were practicing witches and they had a sizable rose quartz in their backyard. I was innately drawn to it and would often sneak into their garden so that I could touch it—I didn’t realize the significance of this until much later in life. I started working with crystals more seriously about 10 years ago when someone gifted me a crystal that was blessed by a shaman. I could physically feel the energy radiating from it. From that point on I was completely hooked.
What makes your approach to crystal healing different? I’m the kind of person who likes to keep busy so practicality and convenience are everything to me. I integrate crystals throughout my day and have been for quite some time. The easiest way to do this is by incorporating them into your existing daily rituals. Get creative and have fun with it and you’ll start to reap the benefits almost immediately.
How did you decide to blend nails and crystals with your crystal healing manicure? I charge all of my beauty products with crystals, drink gem elixir, wear crystal jewelry, and carry them in my pockets and purse. I also have them all over my house depending on the energy I’m trying to achieve in each room. Once I started doing this and reaping the benefits, I yearned to have them physically attached to my body. It only made sense to add crystals to nails since we see our hands all day long. Just simply glancing down at your hands and seeing beautiful gemstones attached is a reminder that they are there to offer added support where we needed it. It was this idea that inspired me to create the Crystal Healing Manicure ritual.
How can crystals and beauty work together? Women have been using the practical application of crystals since ancient times as part of their beauty routine. It is believed that Cleopatra used to rub rose quartz that was naturally tumbled in the Nile River on her face to combat aging. Gua sha has been used for thousands of years in Chinese culture to increase circulation and stimulate collagen production. Besides these practical applications, the other way to integrate crystals is through infusions. The basic laws of physics teach us that everything in the universe is made of energy, vibrating at different frequencies. Crystals vibrate at a very high frequency, and humans—for a variety of different reasons—vibrate at a much lower one. The way that energy works is that it naturally wants to entrain with whatever energy is vibrating at a higher frequency. When we bring crystals into our space, it causes our frequency to elevate, allowing us to reap many different benefits, specifically to our health and well-being. When we put crystals into our skincare, it allows us to literally slather their high vibrations all over our bodies.
How do you select the crystals? I’m extremely sensitive to energy in all forms, which makes purchasing crystals fairly easy for me. I purchase all of my crystals in person so that I can experience their energy and also meet the miners. When selecting crystals for my clients, we give some thought to what they have going on in their lives and what are the areas they could use additional support and those are the principles that guide us.
What is your philosophy when it comes to nails and beauty? I was raised to believe that beauty starts from within. If we don’t feel beautiful on the inside by being kind, loving, and inclusive humans, it’s impossible to be a truly beautiful person on the outside. Once we have that covered, it’s all about personal preference and what makes you feel good. But one thing is for sure, everyone is entitled to feel beautiful.
Why did you introduce CBD products? I learned about CBD when a doctor recommended it to me. I was in a horrific car accident in my early 20s and have suffered with debilitating neck and back problems ever since. About a year and a half ago I threw my neck out and it was so awful that I couldn’t move. My husband literally had to lift me out of bed to take me to the doctor. In addition to the narcotics and muscle relaxers my doctor prescribed me, she also recommended CBD oil. Within 10 minutes of applying it to my neck and back, I could move again. It was a miracle! It worked better than any pill I had ever taken over the years. Ever since that moment I became obsessed and couldn’t stop thinking about how I could incorporate it into my work.
What is one thing about CBD in beauty products that you wish everyone knew? I wish that everyone knew the difference between brands that “weed wash,” meaning that they use branding and colors that mislead the consumer to believe it contains CBD instead of hemp seed oil, and actual CBD brands. It’s unfortunate that during such a critical time in the CBD industry, that there are brands adding to the confusion to make an extra buck by cashing in on something that by some is perceived to be a “trend.” Hemp seed oil is amazing—we use it in many of our products—but it’s certainly not the same as CBD.
What are your favorite products in your line? Right now I have five crystal-infused CBD products available and I’m obsessed with all of them. As a certified crystal healer, I know firsthand how healing crystals can be when combined with other healing modalities, and that’s why bringing crystals and CDB together was a no-brainer for me. I thoughtfully chose each crystal in my products to address specific ailments, and all of the crystals have been blessed by a shaman under a full moon to maximize their vibration. We use the highest quality of organically grown hemp in all of our products and work with a full-spectrum high percentage distillate (around 80%) for maximum efficacy. All of our products are made in small batches to ensure freshness and maximum potency. And of course, each batch is tested by a third party lab to confirm CBD content.
The first CBD product I set out to create was the Smoky Quartz Infusion Foot Spray with 250mg of CBD per 1oz bottle. It’s potent, smells incredible, and it’s non-greasy so you don’t have to worry about it ruining your fancy shoes. It’s also formulated with white willow bark extract and MSM for their pain-relieving properties. I spray this on all of my clients’ feet at the end of each service and before they hit the red carpet. In addition to the benefits of CBD, the smoky quartz has grounding effects and is believed to relieve foot pain and cramping. While I formulated this product for feet, it can also be used on other parts of the body and achy joints.
Even though I’m obsessed with all of my products, the Carnelian Infusion Skin Salve is my personal favorite. I wanted to develop a formula that is thick and hydrating, absorbs quickly, and makes the skin glow. And a little bit goes a long way! I take a dime-sized amount and warm it up in my hands before massaging onto my client’s arms and legs. It’s scented with the same blend of oils from our Magnifier Quartz Infusion Essential Oil and it’s absolutely heavenly. Carnelian, my personal favorite crystal, is incredible for pain relief and increased energy, which is something everyone always needs!
